1. Take a look at the oil
Keeping the oil at the right level and regular oil changes is a good way to keep your car on the road.
The engine is made of moving parts. Engine oil is not just used to lubricate these parts; it acts as a detergent and oxidation inhibitor, it reduces friction, it facilitates the diffusion of heat, it absorbs heat and it helps to prevent overheating.
Do not ignore the oil light when it turns on.
Use the oil quality recommended by the manufacturer.
If you cannot fill the oil tank, go to a gas station and ask the attendant to do it for you.
See in your user guide the schedule of oil changes and do not miss these important appointments.
2. Take care of the tires
It is essential to keep the tires in good condition to drive your BMW safely.
If the tire pressure warning light comes on, go immediately to a gas station to inflate the tires.
The guide tells you the correct PSI (recommended tire pressure).
When it’s cold, be sure to check the tire pressure every two weeks.
If the tires wear out in the same places, you have a clear indication that the wheel alignment or suspension needs servicing.
If the steering wheel vibrates, it may be that the tires need balancing.
Regularly rotate the tires for durability.
3. Pay attention to other liquids
Aside from oil, your car needs other liquids to keep running.
Be sure to check the coolant level regularly and refill the tank when required.
Before winter, check the level of antifreeze.
The washer fluid reservoir must always be full and you must have an additional container in your trunk for emergencies.
4. Drive carefully
This may seem obvious, but driving with caution can extend the life of your car … and yours!
If you accelerate abruptly at start-up, this can further damage the car. So you have to let your car warm up in cold weather before you leave.
If you drive an automatic car, accelerate gradually when the traffic light turns green – it’s not a race!
If you are driving an automatic car, put the lever on neutral at a red light to let the engine rest.
